Chevy Shocks And Struts

Shocks and Struts: What are They?

Also called shock absorbers and strut assemblies, respectively, they're critical parts of a vehicle's suspension system. Shocks, mounted vertically behind the tires, contain hydraulics whose job it is to minimize spring movement. Struts, mounted horizontally, look like extensions of wheels, they often contain both springs and shocks, and they're weight-bearing. (Some vehicles can also have struts on one axle and shocks on the other -- however, not all vehicles necessarily have struts.)

What They Do

They help a vehicle stabilize by controlling the activity of the suspension's coil springs, and this does many things in turn. For one, it helps keep the wheels aligned. Secondly, it reduces body roll. Third, it helps the tires stay on the road. Fourth and finally, it keeps both braking and overall handling consistent. In sum, it keeps a drive well-controlled, and thus, as enjoyable as possible.

The Symptoms of When They Go Bad

They include:

  • Rough ride quality
  • Abnormal forward lean when stopping
  • Bouncing and/or pulling sideways during a turn
  • Worsening steering system response
  • Loss of control at higher speeds
  • Uneven or flat areas on the tires
  • An oily or greasy film on the parts

Just as fortunately, these signs usually appear before the situation gets worse. See any, and you should inspect your suspension and replace whatever the results call for. Otherwise, be sure to check it every 50,000 miles or so, as per most owner's manuals. Double-check yours for more info on what to do and when to do it. When it's time to order parts, make sure to get the genuine article.
