Car Heating and AC Systems: How They Work

Also called climate control systems, they simplify managing and maintaining the temperature in vehicles' cabins during drives. Heating systems work like radiators, sending hot coolant through heater cores; a fan blows over it, and the warm air produced flows through ducts, out vents, and into the interior. Air conditioners work in stages, using compressors, condensers, expansion valves, and evaporators; liquid refrigerant gets transformed into a hot gas, it cools down and back into a liquid, it gets turned into a low-pressure gas once more, and finally, after further chilling, cold air flows into the cabin.

What are the Signs They're Going Out?

There are several, and they're unmistakable. The most obvious is a system that's simply not cooling or heating as well as it used to. Otherwise, look for:

  • A sweet, syrupy smell in the cabin (this is most likely coolant)
  • Steam in the interior
  • Clogs and/or worn-out parts in either or both systems

The causes of heater and air conditioner problems in a car are usually a leaking heater core, leaking refrigerant, and/or low refrigerant levels. If you see any such symptoms (or these issues), it might be time for a repair. Do a thorough car HVAC inspection first, though, to figure out what's happening. If the results suggest the need to buy parts, be sure to get the genuine article.

Why Buy Genuine OEM?

Your brand manufactures them designed to fit your model perfectly. That's a promise that the aftermarket can't always make.
