Lighting: What Kinds Does a Vehicle Have?

More common examples from the factory include headlights, daytime running lights ("DRLs", for short), and taillights. Less common examples include fog lights and specialty lights.

Its Functions

Headlights can function as both high-beams and low-beams. A low beam, you use during most driving. A high beam, you use when it's extremely dark, as it'll be brighter, and it shines wider.

You can also use a headlight as a "flasher," too -- put them together, and you get hazard lights that can warn drivers of dangerous situations on the road or nearby. They can also tell them that you're in distress and that you need help. DRLs and tail lighting, however, give drivers a better view of where you are, and how far away.

Depending on what brand and model you drive, you may have several other types of lighting, too, for nearly every purpose you can imagine. Your signal lights or "blinkers" tell others of a turn or lane change, your brake lights indicate a slowdown or stop, fog lights shine low and brightly in bad weather, and specialty lights accent exterior accessories.

The Types Available

There are three. One is halogen, which is the commonest and which you'll find in many smaller cars. Another is Xenon or high-intensity discharge, which you can find in many sports cars. LED bulbs, you'll find in many newer vehicles.

What Lights Does Your Model Use?

That depends on its body style. Consult your owner's manual for more information.

When to Change a Car Light Bulb

This depends on type and a few signs of problems. Replace Xenon bulbs, for example, when they start dimming, about every three years. Replace LED bulbs if they go out or their electronics fail. Replace halogen bulbs every two years or so. Just be sure that, whatever you buy, it's the genuine article.

Why Buy Genuine OEM?

What your brand manufactures is guaranteed compatible with your model. That's not always the case with aftermarket lighting.
